Kudos

A fwe days ago, I recived an email with a link to problems of stochastic processes, ant the end of the problems I read the following:

"Kudos to you if you find the correct solutions!"

But what is "kudos"???!!!

Kudos: praise and honor received for an achievement.

ORIGIN late 18th cent.: Greek.

USAGE Kudos comes from Greek and means ‘glory.’ Despite appearances, it is not a plural form. This means that there is no singular form kudo and that use as a plural, as in the following sentence, is incorrect: : he received many kudos for his work (correct use is : he received much kudos for his work).

Subtlety

reading the same article that I refer in the previous entry, I found the following "...involves an important subtlety", is the first time that I see the word subtlely, that means: the quality or state of being subtle, and subtle is so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe.

I can't understand

I'm reading this article "On the hardness of optimization in power law graphs", and can't understand a phrase in there, I know all the words, but?! The phrase is:

"... .While the above model is potentially less accurate than the detailed modeling approach of the second second type, it has the advantage ob begin robust and general. " I think that I get the idea of what they try to say but I wiil change less accurate for another terms.

Intimidante

Hoy estuve leyendo "Hard and easy distributions of SAT problems", y la siguiente frase en un principio me causo ruido:

"... A number of papers (some discussed below) have claimed that the difficulty of SAT on randomly generated problems is not so daunting." por un momento confundi la palabra daunting con algo de dudar pero nada que ver, el significado de dauting es intimidante, checando bien el siginificado despues esa frase tuvo sentido.

Meme

Al estar leyendo el programa completo del evento me encontre con la siguiente ponencia "How many good ideas do you need?: An investigation of sizing effects in meta-heristics with evolving local search operators.

Ya habia oido el termino memetic, que es asi como memetico que segun entiendo es como copiar un rasgo un patron imitar algo, mucho animales lo hacen para protegerse o esperar a su presa pero no sabia que el termino memetic es un adjetivo que se deriva de la palabra "meme" eso es bueno saberlo.

"... Such co-evolutionary mechanism requieres a means for assigning meme fitness based in someway...."

Revisando a detalle el programa

Revisando a detalle le programa del evento me tope con este abastract

Parallel Algorithms for Transitive Closure of Digraphs

"We compare and implement three parallel coarse-grained algorithms to compute the transitive closure of a digraph with n versus and m edges. Using p processors, three parallel algorithms, by Alves et al., Vieira, and by Jenq and Sahni, take O(p), O(1), and O(n) communications rounds, respectively. The algorithm of Vieira presents the best experimental results, followed by the algorithms of Alves et al. and by Jenq and Sahni, for large clusters.

La palabra que me causo ruido fue "coarse-grain", encontre lo siguiente pero me quede con la misma duda

coarse-grained :1 coarse in texture or grain | coarse in manner or speech.
coarse: rough or loose in texture or grain | (of a person or a person's speech) rude, crude, or vulgar.

No será como decir fuerza bruta. Auxilio!!! no quiero confundir el término.

No me la sabía

Hasta ahora no he encontrado alguna frase en la cual me llame la atención algo de la gramática, pero encontre una palabra que puede ayudar mucho cuando se redacta un texto cientifico, por lo regular tenemos advantage/disadvantage, pero encontre una que es:

drawback: a feature that renders something less acceptable; a disadvantage or problem : the main drawback of fitting catalytic converters is the cost.|an amount of excise or import duty remitted on imported goods that the importer reexports rather than sells domestically.

Cuando vi la definicion de esta palabra me llamo la atención excise que usado como sustantivo es: a tax levied on certain goods and commodities produced or sold within a country and on licenses granted for certain activities : excise taxes on cigarettes. Y como verbo: cut out surgically : the precision with which surgeons can excise brain tumors | [as adj. ] ( excised) excised tissue | remove (a section) from a text or piece of music : the clauses were excised from the treaty.

¿Cómo se escribe?

Hay veces que uno lee cosas en íngles y se pone a pensar como se escribe realmente una palabra, por ejemplo: optimization yo siempre la escribo de esa manera. Pero en algunos artículos cienfiticos he encontrado que escriben optmisation. La pregunta es como se escribe realmente.

A continuación listo los artículos en donde he leido que escriben optimisation:

Understanding the relationship between scheduling problem structure and heuristic performance using knowledge discovery

Application of statistical mechanics to NP-complete problems in combinatorial optimisation.

A random walk in statistical physics
